Unable to purchase books on Apple Books

Anytime I want to purchase a book on the Apple Books app, it won't let me. What happens is that I click on the price e.g. I click on the button that displays $14.99, input the correct password, and then the icon starts spinning in a circle but the purchase never actually goes through. I wait a bit, refresh the app, and that purchase never went through. It doesn't work on ipad nor on iphone

Why did Apple gut and destroy the Apple Books app? I am sure I am not alone in my total disgust with the 16.2 update to the Apple Books app. Now, on both my phone and iPad, the bookmark is continually being activated as I am scrolling to the next page, the current page and pages left in the chapter isn’t visible without having to click on this awkward box menu in the bottom corner of the page, the resume option is missing, on my phone the text for current page is so large it is unreadable. Am I missing something? I don’t think so. This seems to be a current and repeated theme of the Books App reviews. Until these issues are addressed and fixed I will not be buying another book from the Apple Book store. Kindle here I come.
