How do I highlight only text in Pages without extra space?

In Pages, when I highlight text so I can choose a background color, it highlights 2 lines instead of just the 1 line of text I want to give a background color. In other words, it highlights the text and the line below it that has no text. How do I get it to just highlight the text and not the empty space below it?

A true word processing highlight is applied by selecting only the text you want to highlight, and then on the Pages Format panel, you want to click the More text options selector:

and on that sub-menu, select either the color inkwell, or the color chooser globe to set the highlight color from Text Background. Do not use the Insert menu -> Highlight menu item for this purpose.
