Hello, elliemcmanus!

Before I answer your question, it’s important that you understand that Apple Intelligence is coming in a series of “waves.”

The first wave introduces new Siri features, like a new look, the ability to type to Siri, the ability for Siri to understand you when you stumble or make mistakes, the ability for Siri to remember what you said in the request right beforehand, and Siri’s new knowledge about Apple products; Writing Tools such as Proofread, Rewrite, Summarize, and Organize; Smart Reply, Priority Notifications, and Email Summaries in Mail; Smart Reply and Notification Summaries in Messages; Webpage Summaries; Notification Summaries and the Reduce Interruptions Focus; summaries of phone calls and recordings; and new capabilities in Photos like natural language search, the ability to create Memory Movies with just a description, and the ability to remove objects with Clean Up.

The second wave introduces ChatGPT integration; Visual Intelligence; the new Description Writing Tool; and image generation capabilities like Image Playground, Image Wand, and the feature you are referring to: Genmoji.

The third wave introduces the new and improved Siri, capable of understanding you.

The first wave came out in the beginning of October with iOS 18.1. You can get all of its features by making sure that your iPhone is fully updated and downloading Apple Intelligence in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.

The third wave will be out next year. The second wave won’t be out for about a week… kinda.

See, before Apple releases an update to the public, it first goes through a stage called a beta. This is when users that are enrolled in the Apple Beta Program test a feature and find issues before it’s released. I looks like your friend is part of the Apple Beta program.

If you want to get access to these features before next week, you need to enroll in the Apple Beta Program. Once you’re accepted, you can download the iOS 18.2 Beta on your iPhone. Then go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri to get early access to these features.

WARNING: I highly recommend waiting instead. Beta versions are often unstable and have bugs and software issues that may affect your daily use of your iPhone.

I hope this helps!
