How to remove thumbnails from URLs in pages and mail?

When I paste a URL into a Pages document or a Mail message, the software likes to include a thumbnail image of the Web page. Is there any way to get it to show just the URL without the image? Thanks for any advice.

I can't reproduce this on Pages - URLs just post as text as I expect, but in Mail, it does show a preview by default.

However, each link has an option to be shown as a preview or as a plain link.. just use the pop-up menu along side the link to choose the Plain Link option:
