Apple TV Facetime Continuity Device is only using Speakerphone - need to use bluetooth remote microphone

I have my iPhone 16 as the continuity device for my Apple TV 4K facetime.

We have tried various 'plug in and it works' USB-C based bluetooth remotes and they call connect just fine to the phone (blinking LEDs become solid when connected as they should).

When we use facetime on the Apple TV, it uses the speakerphone on the iPhone 16, not the USB-C microphones.

No one can hear us much if we drift out of speakerphone range to 8-12 feet away.

We believe this is an issue with continuity devices not having an option of microphone choice when being used, but if anyone can dispute this, please let us know.
