Erasing an old iPad Air 2. How do I erase all for disposal without affecting other apps thru iCloud?

My old iPad Air 2 has lost its photo display ability (all pictures are displayed in weird psychedelic colors. I haven't used this device for over a year. I want to erase all to dispose of it but when I start the procedure as directed to reset, it wants to connect to my iCloud and I'm afraid it will alter iCloud files. I don't want to upload or save anything on this device and I don't want to affect my iCloud that exists for all of my other devices. When I start reset it wants to connect as "App Data Not Backed Up". It says data from iTunes U and 72 other apps will be permanently deleted. That is fine, those items were backed up when I got the new iPad. My fear is if I back up now it will displace or alter other data in my iCloud accounts. Again, I just want to let this one die so I can safely dispose of a broken unit.

Carol B., I read that one before but it didn't give me any confidence that it wasn't going to mess with my existing iCloud files. It wants me to backup - I don't want to back up - these are old unused files that I retrieved when I got my new iPad 2 years ago. I'm afraid it's going to add files from the old iPad to my iCloud (maybe files I had subsequently deleted on my new iPad and now it thinks I still want them) and it's going to mess up files on my iCloud account. I just want to kill this old iPad without affecting my cloud account. Is that possible?

Craig, I have followed the link posted by CarolB before and it works. You need to make sure that your old device is signed out of iCloud, remove it from Find My (if you had that on) and it is signed out of everything mentioned in the link and continue. You do not need to back it up if you are confident that you have all the documents etc. you need on your new device.

If you would feel more confident you can go into the iCloud website, sign in and check to see that all the files you want are there.
