External Monitor Issue After macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 Update

Hi everyone,

After updating my MacBook Air M2 to macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, I’ve encountered an issue with my external monitor. I connect my ViewSonic monitor via an HDMI-to-Type-C cable. The monitor works for about 5 seconds after being connected, then the screen goes black.

Interestingly, the monitor is still detected in the display settings, and I can even move the cursor into the display area—but nothing is visible on the screen.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far without success:

  • Adjusting the resolution and refresh rate.
  • Booting in Safe Mode.
  • Resetting display profiles.
  • Rebooting the system.

To rule out hardware issues, I tested the same setup on my MacBook Air M1. Before the update to macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, it worked perfectly. After updating, the same problem occurred.

However, I tried connecting to a Samsung external monitor, and that worked fine.

Has anyone else faced similar issues or found a solution? I’d appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

Thanks!

I have same issue after update my os. 15.1.1 since last week. But today my Mac book pro 2019 T2 chips built in display starting to glitch and flickering look like my display is broken. I tried again and again but still happening, I hope it will be okay soon, please check and photo also. I don’t have any money for changing new display and quite expensive though. I wish and I hope Apple can be repair this issue soon.

I have the same issue here. I'm using a MacBook Pro M1 with a Dell P2721Q. The issue occurs whether I use a USB-C or HDMI cable, without any hub.

The issue seems to have started when I first upgraded to Sequoia 15.1 and has continued in Sequoia 15.1.1 and 15.2.

I've tested all the steps mentioned by other users, but nothing has worked for me. I also formatted my laptop twice and took it to Apple Support, but they didn't find any issues during the tests.

I tested the same monitor and cables with another MacBook Pro M1 (running Sequoia 15.1.1), and the same error occurred. I also tested two different MacBook Air M1 running Sonoma and a Dell running Windows, and no issue occurred.

It seems the error occurs more frequently when I use the camera, watch videos on the external monitor, or perform tasks that demand more from the video adapter. During meetings with the camera on and screen sharing, if the meeting window (normally Google Meet on Chrome, but it happens on Safari too) is on the external monitor, the issue becomes even more frequent, making it impossible to use the external monitor.

Today, I closed the lid and used the external monitor as the primary display. I was on a call with myself, playing a YouTube video that was being shared, and no issues occurred. It's important to note that the camera was off since I don't have an external webcam. After some time, I opened the lid and continued playing the video without any issues, until I opened the built-in camera. Once the camera was turned on, it took a few seconds before the screen went black. The message 'No USB-C signal from your device' appeared, and after two seconds the screen returned to normal.

Exact same problem but with a Viewsonic monitor connected with USB-C to mini display port connected directly to my USB-C port on Macbook Air M1 while in clamshell mode.

I started working with my mac laptop open although I only use the extenal monitor. It seems to alleviate the problem but does not completely resolve it.

Tried all the things named everywhere and still got the problem to this day.

I also tried with a HDMI cable connected to a USB-c hub and got the same problem.

This setup (mac in clamshell with external monitor connected to USB-C port worked flawlessly for a couple of years before this Sequoia update (15.1).

I've the same problem on my MacMini M1 with two LG 34" monitors. One of them, connected by an USB-C/Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter cable, gets dark for 1-2 seconds every few minutes since updating to 15.1.1.

When I changed the refresh rate to 30 Hz, then BOTH monitors showed this behaviour, surprisingly simultaneously!

Another USB-C to DVI to HDMI adapter chain didn't help. Looking for some other hardware in my junk box, I found an adapter box for VGA, DVI and HDMI. Using HDMI again, both monitors are as functional as before.

I just started a new job and was happy to get an Airbook with the M3 chip and an Asus monitor. I had Sonoma and hooked into the monitor with an HDMI to USB adapter, but it made my mouse jittery. I updated to the latest Sequoia 15.2 and bought a new USB-C monitor cable for a direct connection.

Now the monitor just flickers. It turns on, then off, on and off... I did everything here on the thread to fix it. Deleted the preference file, restarted, unplugged, etc.

I haven't yet downgraded back to Sonoma, but that is my next step.

I would blame the cable or something else, but the same thing happened at home when I connected via a USB-C to HDMI adapter. I thought my adapter was just bad and that caused the blinking, but now I know it is something with this Airbook.

I searched for this issue... I can't believe I am the only one who has it.

I hope there is some fix. It is so frustrating. I have wasted an hour already today.

I updated my M1 MacBook Pro MAX to Sequoia last week and ever since my external monitor (via usb-c) does not work properly after the machine sleeps. After the machine sleeps both the external monitor and the built in screen become very low resolution (800x600 I think) and mirrored. None of the display options or resolution settings are able to return to the proper resolutions. The only solution is to unplug the external monitor and plug it back in again. This is very annoying each time I go for a cup of tea... The workaround is to prevent the machine from sleeping, but then I have to remember to go back into the battery settings to do it at the end of a day and I usually forget...

Is there something I have missed? I have never had this issue with previous versions of macOS on this machine and monitor setup (since 2021). Surely a new OS version should be better than the last - not with bugs like this.
