iPad 9th gen Facetime appearance and gesture features not working

I bought an iPad 9th generation (refurbished by apple) for my son's birthday.

He loves making call with his grandparents and loved using the gestures like thumbs up etc or using the memoji as appearance when was using my iphone to call.

I checked that the iPad is compatible with these features on the documentation, but it looks like they are not available? Tried everything, control center doesn't show the features, I've removed the app and redownloaded but nothing.

I'd like to find a solution so that it works as intended.
