.png backgrounds solid black in iMovie

I've read the various suggestions but nothing has helped. Installed latest iMovie ( 10.4.3 ) running with Sonoma 14.6.1 but still can't import .png, or other files which ought to have transparent backgrounds, from Photoshop. That which should be clear is completely solid black. Sooo frustrating I've been using the technique for years to create animated paintings but not now when I've acquired a Mac with sufficient punch...

Is it just me?

Hi,

Different .png files can have different algorithms that affect the transparency properties. PNG files from a screen shot will not have transparency. PNG transparency files created in the Preview app will have transparency in iMovie, but with a black background unless overlayed using the Picture in Picture feature. I have found that transparencies created with the Keynote app on the Mac will import with full transparency into iMovie, i.e, no black background.

If the .png file shows a black background in iMovie, put it into the upper timeline and overlay it into a background clip or a photo or a video clip using the Picture in Picture feature. It will overlay with full transparency.
