Grayed out songs play but don't transfer

On a Mac Studio using Music I have songs in smart playlists that are grayed out. The songs meet the definitions for the playlists. They play when clicked. The grayed out songs don't transfer to other devices when synching but all the other songs do sync. The media for these playlists are on an external disk.

Unchecked songs are usually excluded from syncing. Try right-clicking on a set of greyed out songs and see if the option Check or Tick Selection appears. If so select it and see if that resolves things. Note that you can check or uncheck all tracks in the current view by Ctrl/Cmd-clicking a check box, which is the kind of thing you can do accidentally.

I know that. I have checkboxes everywhere except in <playlists viewed in playlist mode>. I'm still using Monterey so perhaps Apple fixed that problem in more recent systems. I'm glad they fixed the problem when I synched playlists on my phone and also synched albums that contained songs from the playlists and then the songs in the playlists were duplicated in the playlists on my phone. I had to use iMazing to clean up that problem. But now everything works fine with no duplicates.

But it's weird to check something I can't see. The gray acts as an indicator as to whether or not the item is checked. I'm satisfied my problem has been fixable, though inconveniently. I'll live.
