Battery has X icon but the power source is battery while plugged in and a steady amber light
I left my Macbook Pro M1 16-inch 2021 unplugged for around 1 month. I connected it to power(87W OEM charger) it wouldn't turn on and showed a black screen with a battery sign with red sliver and a lightning bolt below it. It would show the icon on the screen for about 2-3 seconds and then restart to do it again. So I tried a couple more chargers which I could borrow (unfortunately couldn't get ahold of any 96W or 140W OEM, just smaller wattage ones, 61W, 67W).
When connecting to one of the chargers (not Apple but Belkin) with multiple ports, I heard the startup sound on 140W port. The fans started really loud, and I could get to the login screen. After entering the password, the macbook shutdown and started again automatically after 2-3 seconds. This kept happening repeatedly. I could get into the recovery mode and there the when hovering over the battery icon, it showed it as 0%. When I checked "pmset -g rawbatt" at the terminal it showed "No AC; Not Charging; FCC=0". The boot date showed 03/31/1976. While "pmset -g ps" gave the result as "Now drawing from 'Battery Power'".
I ran "ioreg -l -r -n AppleSmartBattery" which yielded almost all the values as 0 or empty including the serial number and the device name but "BatteryInstalled" value was "Yes".
At this point I tried to reinstall the OS through Recovery mode, but could not move forward because of the warning popup "Your computer is not connected to a power source".
I ran diagnostics and it warned me to connect an adapter, but proceeded by itself in 20-30 seconds I think. I got an error value of "PPP007", something is wrong with the adapter. I tried the same adapter and same cable with 1 Macbook Pro M1 14 inch and a Macbook Air, and they both were being charged and showed the adapter information in the power section of the system information correctly.
I opened up the back plate and disconnected/reconnected the battery but that did not help. I tried a few more things inbetween which I found on forums, like button combinations, charging it for prolonged times etc, but those didn't help either.
I also tried DFU revive and DFU restore, but they both would fail once the restart happened. MacBook will restart 2-3 times and it would fail with "Unexpected device state 'BootedOS' expected 'DFU'". Once in a while I was able to boot and login after a few tries which lasted for 2-3 minutes before shutdown. Under Battery Health Information I could see values as:
Cycle Count: 0
Condition: Service Recommended
Maximum Capacity: 88%
Also, under Charge Information:
The battery's charge is below the warning level: Yes
Fully Charged: No
Charging: No
State of charge(%): 1
I bought another adapter (Honeywell 100W), because while running all those commands and trying to troubleshoot I saw somewhere the maximum capacity as 88% and hoped another high output adapter might help. It looked like wasn't charging so I just left it connected at that point for maybe 2-3 days, followed by around 1.5 days disconnected (someone unknowingly removed the cable). When I plugged in again the MacBook turned on. I went into recovery mode as I had been doing that to check terminal and the battery showed as 42% charged. I ran "ioreg -l -r -n AppleSmartBattery" in the terminal all the values were populated, like, serial number, device name, cycle count = 291 etc. instead of the previous empty values. I ran "pmset -g batt", but this still said "Now drawing from 'Battery Power'".
I logged into the system right after this, but the charge now showed as 1% on the battery icon, and all the values for AppleSmartBattery went back to zero. I updated the OS version to 15.0.1 via DFU successfully.
I checked system information which showed "Maximum capacity: -" and "State of Charge(%): 1". While under Battery Settings in System Preferences "Maximum Capacity" showed as "-1%". I disconnected the MacBook from power supply and was able to run it for around 4-5 hours doing very little on the Mac but some simple browsing, and keep the screen on. It ran it down to 0, in hindsight I should not have done that, costly mistake.
After restarting while plugged in, now I see an "x" on the battery icon in the menu with the Power Source: Battery and a Low Battery warning sign.
Charging light is always Amber. Readings from USB voltmeter shows that the current draw is around ~0.3 Amps consistently (Voltage is ~20.1V). I have tried 61W, 67W, 87W, 140W adapters, all with the same/similar draw. Although, when using the 140W adapter, I can get till the Login screen(and sometimes login successfully for ~2 mins before shutdown), while others keep restarting with a black screen with red battery every 2-3 seconds. The current raw is 0 Amps when it is shutdown or in-between the restart periods.
What else can I try on my own, since getting to an AASP is difficult for me as we do not have a lot of them in my country. Any help and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!
