Hard drive full all of a sudden?

out of the blue I have 345.35GB of "system data" on my M1 mac mini.

unsure what this relates to but now Time Machine is telling me it can't back up as there no space on my 2TB external hard drive - its brand new and hasn't done a back up yet?
