Using Serbian Cyrillic in Microsoft365 Excel

I'm using Macbook with MacOS Catalina 15.1 and Microsoft365. There are Serbian (Latin) and Serbian language installed together with English (UK) as a primary language. When I try to enter password in excel protecct sheet dialog, I can't choose Serbian with Cyrillic script, but only Serbian (Latin) and English (UK). Problem is when I have to use excel files with password protected sheets with Serbian (Cyrillic) set by from someone else. If I have to edit content on protected sheets I can't enter Cyrillic characters.

Upon testing with my own Excel, I see that it does not permit creating a password with any non-Latin script and throws up the error message shown below. I recommend you ask in the MS forums how to solve this problem.

Do you have the apple input source called Serbian on the list at System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit > All Input Sources? If not, use the the + button at the bottom of the list to add it and then use it to type the password.

If you do have that input source available but it is not working, please explain exactly what it happening when you try to use it.

Hi Tom, thanks for reply. I have 3 input sources in system settings - English (UK), Serbian (Latin) and Serbian. The last one is Serbian language with Cyrillic script. It is strange for almost all people that we have Serbian language and can use it with two different character set, Latin and Cyrillic (of course not in the same time :-). When I want to type text in any applications, I can choose any of those three language, but if I want to input password in password dialog on protection of excel sheet, I can choose only between English and Serbian (Latin).

Are you saying that when you click on the Input Menu in the top right corner of the Menu Bar, you can see "Serbian" on the list, but it is grayed out? Or it is not grayed out but you cannot choose it with the track pad? Or you can choose it but nothing appears in the password field when you type?

Have you tried typing the password into an app where the Serbian keyboard does work and then copy/pasting into the password field?

Microsoft is a 3rd party app. They are a very large company and their apps do not have the same level of system integration as other apps. Microsoft is able to develop significantly more functionality on their own than other app developers.

However, they do this so that their apps are the same on macOS and Windows. Windows does not have the same level of support for non-English languages. Therefore, neither do Microsoft Mac apps.

I have a greyed Serbian language, it is not possible to choose it. It is interesting that Serbian(Latin) is possible even with using very specific Serbian character like š, đ, č, ć and ž. Obviously, only latin script is allowed, Cyrillic is forbidden from some strange reason for me. I tried copy/paste from application allowing to enter Cyrillic characters, but paste doesn't work.

I didn't have any trouble creating a password of "русский язык".

On my (Sonoma) Numbers, if I do File > Set Password, Russian and all non-Latin keyboards (Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, etc) are grayed out and not usable. But I can use Copy/Paste to put non-Latin in the Password field. Is yours different?

OMG!

The only languages I ever type in are English and French. I don't need to change keyboards for that. But I had assumed that it wouldn't make a difference. Apparently, I over-estimated Apple's support for non-English languages. This is just awful - absolutely awful. Who in their right mind ever thought this was a good idea? There's a certain word for this, but I'm sure I'm not allowed to say it here in the forums.

You can't even delete the English keyboard at all! It automatically switches for you in any password field. Do people know that? Or are all of their passwords just wrong? OMG!

You don't even need to copy and paste. Try Disk Utility. Create an encrypted DMG and then click on the password helper button. Said helper doesn't switch you to English. And yet, typing and passwords work just fine, don't they?

OMG.

Very interesting that the Helper permits all keyboards! But the Helper is not there when you try to unlock something, so I think you still need copy/paste for that.
