Apple Intelligence does much of the processing on the iPhone. This helps with privacy and security concerns that many people have about artificial intelligence. However, by performing most of the work on the iPhone, the processors and graphics components get very warm. This also consumes more battery capacity and the byproduct of fast discharge of a battery is heat.

This all combines to make for a very warm device. Remember, unlike desktop and laptop computers, handheld devices lack active cooling such as fans. Heat is dissipated by dispersing it through the glass and metal outer components.
