Inability to copy portions of text messages on iPhone

why is it that when you want to cut or copy a received text message you cannot or never cut or copy just portion of it. You always have to cut and copy the whole message to get one word or once end of it. before Apple makes the next Apple 17 phone they need to re-look at the basic working functions of every single app including texting.
