Badges don’t appear on Messages on Ipad

I cannot get the badge on my iPad messages app to show on my iPad (6th generation). iPadOS 16.5 (20F66). Badges was enabled. I disabled it, rebooted, enabled it, rebooted again. The notification settings are the same as on my iphone where the badge shows as needed. I just recently wondered why the same badge does not appear on the iPad and could not find a solution that worked.
