Why is my recovery key not accepted on my Mac?

Hi,

I just set up a 28 char recovery key on my iPhone to restore a lost password on my Mac. This password is automatically created for me, I cannot edit it.

When I go to recovery options on my Mac, I am only able to enter 24 char as the recovery key, thus getting a wrong password message.

what is going on?
