You are using what type of external drive(s) and peripherals with the Mac?

How is it connected – directly to the Mac or through a hub?

If your peripherals are bus powered, i.e. getting their power direct from the computer, it may be that they in combination with any other peripherals you have connected to the computer are trying to draw more power than the Mac can easily supply. When that happens the disk may disconnect and the Mac will display that error message.

You might try disconnecting all but the external drive that is giving you trouble and running the computer with only that for a time and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then you can assume you can't connect all your peripherals at the same time.

Another possibility is that the cabling used to connect the drive is poorly made or faulty in some way. Make sure you are using only quality cables for your drive.
