While creating and writing documents for the past two months after updating my iMac to Sonoma, all Word documents have been saved as Pages files. I can still open them in Word, but it is taking up too much space having all my documents duplicated. Is there a way to change the default back to Word? Thank you.

I should note that I have an institutional license for MS Word, but it is not currently in my applications folder. Maybe that is the issue. I have no idea why it is not in my applications folder if I can create documents with Word.
Check with your institutional IT team to determine the correct means to provide Word on your Mac. If that institutional license is for any older Microsoft Office suite than what is currently provided by Microsoft, or Windows only, then it will not install on macOS Sonoma.
With Pages installed and without Microsoft Word, any Word document that you open will be opened by Pages and immediately translated into a Pages document with its inherent document icon. The original Word document remains unchanged and will not bear a Pages document icon.
