Trouble with Microsoft word mailmerge printing

I am trying to print about 250 mail merged letters from my Mac book. After about 50 letters my printer started smoking so I shut it off to rest. When I wanted to resume, it just started over at the beginning again. I tried saving the merge to anew file to see if that would help. But no. Then I ever erased the ones I had already printed but the printer still started at the beginning. I am going to have to do small batches so have to figure how to resume from the last printed letter several times. Thank you for any ideas!
