iTunes for Windows crashes while restoring iPad Pro M4 with iPadOS 18.0.1

Currently having the same issue.

Win11 24H2 - all other devices are 24H2

iPhone13 18.1 - 18.1.1

Reinstalled itunes. Still bricking my iphone13 18.1.1

Currently trying 'Apple Devices App (Australia Site)' from the Microsoft store. It's redownloading the firmware, I wasn't able to point it to a version I downloaded by holding SHIFT like in iTunes.

-First download of firmware came up with a corrupted error

-Selected restore while holding shift and it allowed me to select the firmware I downloaded from IPSW.me

-Happily restoring and installing 18.1.1 until 50% then I got an error. 1109

-Now downloading 18.1

--Cancel the auto restore, Select restore with SHIFT and selected 18.1

--Failed

Found a laptop and installed win10 22h2 and used the Apple Devices App to restor and upgrade.

-Firmware applied....

-Restarted and resetting to factory settings

-Restarted and able to apply my backup.

Apple you need to fix these issues. Being unable to apply an update through iTunes or Apple Devices App on 24H2 and almost bricking a device is not cool.

I'm coming back to you to share my feedback regarding the magnificent Apple Devices software on Windows to do iOS/iPadOS updates on my iDevices

As a reminder:

The Apple Devices software version 1.5.0.160 (1.1280.40963.0) only works on Windows 11 23H2 or Windows 10 22H2, it does not work on the latest version of Windows: 24H2

This week, Apple updated the software to version 1.5.2.58 (1.1282.14849.0), I thought great I'll be able to test it on my Windows 11 23H2, it should work, then if it works I'll switch my Windows 11 to 24H2 and continue my tests, but not at all, the software simply crashed the update of my iDevice to 18.2, and it's also impossible to restore my iDevice (I had to go back to Windows 10 from another PC)

I continue my tests, thinking that by switching my Windows 11 to version 24H2 and having the Apple Devices software in version 1.5.2.58 (1.1282.14849.0) maybe Apple's patch would allow iDevice updates to be done on a Windows 11 24H2, well NO, NOT AT ALL, crash again during the update. This software is a hoax!

In conclusion, if you are a fan of iOS/iPaDOS updates from a Windows PC (if this is not the case, run away, do the updates from the iDevices, it is clearly more reliable), otherwise what I can advise is:

- Try to keep your Windows 11 in version 23H2 and keep the Apple Devices software in version 1.5.0.160 (1.1280.40963.0) - Be careful, application updates from the Microsoft Store are done automatically in the background, unless you uncheck the box

- If you are on a Windows 11 24H2, at the moment for my part, the two versions of the Apple Devices software 1.5.0.160 (1.1280.40963.0) and 1.5.2.58 (1.1282.14849.0) do not do not work to do the updates (to see the next Windows and/or Apple Devices updates, continue to do tests)

- And if you are on a Windows 10 22H2, only the Apple Devices software version 1.5.0.160 (1.1280.40963.0) works, do not install version 1.5.2.58 (1.1282.14849.0)

Last point, if unfortunately you have installed version 1.5.2.58 (1.1282.14849.0), to return to this version (1.5.0.160 (1.1280.40963.0)) see this link: https://apple-devices.en.uptodown.com/windows/download ; Warning, first uninstall the Apple Devices software that does not work

PS: All this concerns the updates of the iDevices from this software, otherwise to make backups of your iDevices the software whatever its version (1.5.0.160 and 1.5.2.58) works perfectly

I have the same issue and finally found the solution.

You probably installed iTunes from Windows Store.

Uninstall iTunes that downloaded from Microsoft Store. And then download iTunes from this link:

https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/win64

Then try restoring your ipad again.

Hi, I had the same problem with my various Apple devices to update to version 18.1, finally you have to go back to Windows 11 23H2 or another version of Windows, other than 24H2, it is this version that is causing the mess

I had the same issue while restoring my iPad Air 4th Gen, im updated to the Latest windows 24H2 and been using iTunes from Microsoft Store but after encountering this issues i completely uninstalled my iTunes and made sure to delete below files after uninstalling and then did a reboot.

Delete any of the following folders should they exist: (see note 3)

• C:\Program Files\Bonjour
• C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
• C:\Program Files\iPod
• C:\Program Files\iTunes

also potentially on 64-bit systems:

• C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
• C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple
• C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod
• C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes

Now installed fresh windows version of iTunes using link: https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/win64 and tried again to restore my iPad stuck in restore mode and it worked, no more crash and restore was successful.

Having the exact same issue, just with an iPhone XR. Apple Devices just stalls & the progress bar on both the iPhone & Apple Devices app sit there. iTunes when doing a restore just crashes at the start.

I don't have iMazing unfortunately, so I'm stuck with a phone in Recovery Mode that I can do nothing with.

I tired reinstall Windows and iTunes(store version/exe version), both not work. From the Windows log, it shows objc.dll crash.

To avoid the issue, roll back to 23H2 or use thrid party tools.

If you already blocked in the recovery mode, try restart your phone and reconnect in the third party tools, you will can reset the phone again.

the solution can be found in below thread and mainly the issue is caused by iTunes version downloaded from Microsoft store and not being able to run the app as administrator.

I am experiencing the same issue.

Tested the following:

• iTunes will crash within the first 10% of the restore
  • Re-installed iTunes to no effect. Didn't matter if the exe came from Microsoft Store or not.
• Attempted to use Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store
  • Apple Devices, on restore option, crashed at 50% with an 1109 error.
  • Apple Devices, on update, crashed at 10% with error 75

I've attached images of the relevant errors and versions of programs.

I am on Win11 24H2. I tested this on two devices, iPhone SE 2nd gen and iPhone 11. Both devices had enough onboard space, were fully charged, and entered into DFU mode prior to any action. Errors were the same regardless of device.

Can Confirm - Windows 11 24H2 crashes during restore, bricking the phone (brand new iPhone 16 Pro. I have another computer, with 23H2, and was able to DFU reset the phone, then restore it from the 24H2 computer, which has a fresh backup of my old iPhone 15.

I was stuck in the recovery mode loop with iTunes crashing at the initial software verification step for iOS 18.2 on a win11 24h2 machine. I installed a win11 23h2 virtual machine using Oracle VirtualBox so I wouldn't have to roll back windows on my host machine and it resolved the bug for my iPhone 12 Mini through iTunes. The VM was successfully able to update the firmware without any data loss in my case, so until Apple fixes their stuff this could be another alternative for those who don't want to roll back their host machine's Windows version or don't have a spare computer.

Yes! This bit me yesterday while updating my iPhone 15 from iOS 18.0.1 to 18.1 via iTunes. I have gotten into the habit of taking backups and doing a full iTunes update on the major point releases. When I tried it yesterday, iTunes crashed repeatedly right as it would begin the update, leaving my phone with the same partial progress bar noted above.

I was able to use a laptop that has not yet gotten the Win11 24H2 update to finish the iOS update via iTunes, then return to the original computer and restore the backup. In the end, the phone is updated and restored, but it was a whole lot more work than usual. I realize 24H2 is very new and still struggling, but please add it to your farm of test machines and do what you can to improve the stability of iTunes!

Thank you SOOO much for this, i was ready to return my iPad Air after a failed update and the inabilty to restore it as iTunes kept crashing. After reading your post I dragged out my 10 year old Surface pro and while it struggled i soon had the iPad up and running again.

It seems that the issue is related to the version 1.1280.40963.0 of the Apple Devices software coupled with Windows 24H2. Several users have reported similar problems when updating their Apple devices. While waiting for Apple to release a fix for its software, it is recommended to revert to the 23H2 version of Windows if you want to update your iPad
