trouble with Facetime on Monterey

Trying to Facetime with a remote Monterey system. When I start a connection, the dock icon highlights, but I don't get any sort of connection acceptance on the Desktop. That is, I can't Facetime TO the Monterey system. Somewhat oddly, this is what Preferences in Facetime on the Monterey system looks like. "You can be reached for Facetime at" is dimmed. BTW, I CAN initiate a Facetime call FROM the Monterey system.
