I am running out of storage on my MacBook. If I were to return it to its original configuration, thus erasing everything and reinstalling from the backup, could I keep the mail program from reinstalling? I don't look at it on this machine anyway and it takes up a lot of storage,

The Apple Mail app is part of the MacOS. It can not independently installed or removed.
Thank you. I wish it were otherwise, but you have saved me a lot of trouble trying to do something that couldn’t work.
