Re installing OSX on a desktop

I bought an 2007 apple imac desktop from a second hand shop recently. It will not boot into a normal mode . It only boots to the recovery screen which gives you the option to for example restore from a time machine back up or reinstall the OSX from the internet. I have tried to download an apple ios from the internet but i think it refuses as the previous owners apple id is associated with this computer.

Is the best option to erase the main macintosh hard drive and reinstall from discs?I have OSX installation discs.

I am aware of the age of the computer but want it for a music mixing project.
