iPhone XR Battery Discharge and Charging Problem

I recently updated my iPhone to latest software 18.0.1 and have noticed the battery charge has dropped considerably. I now have a message that my battery is significantly degraded and when I charge the phone it gets to 77% charged and powers off. Not good when I could get an emergency call and the phone has powered off! I also have a vertical line top to bottom on my screen that is permanent on the left hand side.
