Apple Car Play - SMS/Text Not Responding to voice

I've seen similar questions to this without resolution that are a few years old, so wanted to see if anyone had a fix to a specific problem.

BTW Using Carplay in a new model car (Audi), iOS is 17.7, car software up to date.

Siri and other Carplay functions work fine (i.e. "Hey Siri" works fine, can ask for music, Apple maps and anything else I've needed) but cannot respond to an SMS/text message.

I can say, "Hey Siri, text whomever" and the service starts, but does not respond to my voice and times out. Siri can read me a text message, then asks if I want to reply. I say "Reply" which works, but the devices act like they go deaf after that.

This doesn't happen if I'm using my phone without Carplay or via my Apple watch, just while using Carplay. Also worked just fine in my last Audi.

Any ideas?
