Why won't my iPhone X show new messages until I open the app?

I have an iPhone X running iOS 16.7.10. For the last several weeks, new messages won't show up until I open the Messages app, then they all show up at once. One time, I was texted a job offer, but I didn't get the text until later that day when I opened Messages. How do I get new messages to show up and ding when I receive them?
