PHOTOS displaying darker on older MacBook Pro Retina

I've got an older MacBook Pro Retina maxed out with Catalina (can't go any newer OS). All of my digital camera images, whether from cellphones or SLR's always appear darker when viewed on the laptop, regardless of what app is being used to view them. The Retina's display is fine. This is baffling.
