My white, flat bluetooth keyboard only works when plugged into USB port on my i-Mac all the time. why can I do? Bluetooth is on and my magic mouse works perfectly on my desk by the keyboard's side.

If that doesn't help, take the Keyboard to your local Apple Store or AASP and have it tested.
Things fail, it sounds like the bluetooth in the keyboard died. You might have to get another one.
Thanks very much for your time and trouble but I still can't connect. I suppose I can simply continue using my Magic Keyboard via the USB cable which isn't such a hardship as I don't remove it from my desk anyway but I just like things working as they should!
