interrupting Disk Utility

Trying to initialize 4TB external HD via Disk Utility but need to interrupt and start over with a lower security erase. This is on (old) iMac 10.13.6, so will just quitting DU allow a startover?

Reseting HD on iMac 2014 Big Sur I'm trying to erase all of my personal data prior to donating my iMac late 2014 Big Sur 11.7. During the rest process (Restart, "Command R"), I'm unable to get my USB-wired keyboard nor BT mouse to work in order to move forward with the process. Help!

erase option not highlighted I am trying to erase the hard drive on my iMac before I trade it in. The drive shows up on the left but the Erase option is not active. Do you have suggestions on how to erase the hard drive?
