How can I resolve Apple Account association issues on my iPhone?

iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 18.0.01

The full warning which I just got when updating to iOS 18.0.1 is:

This Device is Already Associated With an Apple Account

If you turn on Automatic Downloads with your Apple Account, you cannot auto-download or download past purchases with a different Apple Account for 90 days.

The choices are: [Cancel] or [Transfer]

I purchased my iPhone from a friend who is "Apple knowledgeable" and he swears he went through all the steps Apple recommends before selling the iPhone to me but to me this alert would seem to indicate that the iPhone is in some way still associated with his Apple Account and I have no idea what to do or whether to click on [Cancel] or [Transfer]. Assuming [Transfer] would transfer the iPhone to my Apple Account, this would seem to be the appropriate choice but I welcome advice as to whether that is the correct choice.

Many thanks for any assistance.

He needs to go through the process again as the device is still attached to his Apple ID.

I suppose weirdly i’m fortunate that i only get this annoying message once a day when i switch my phone on in the morning. I’ve done 2 updates since and nothing has changed.

My main concern now is if it gets any worse with future updates - I’ve accepted Apple don’t care and won’t try to fix it, just wanted to know if it will get worse after this latest update - which I haven’t updated yet.

Thank you for this. This is the only thing I’ve seen that might help with the annoying, long-lasting bug. It’s weird that Apple seems so clueless or apathetic about it - I guess it simply hasn’t been widespread enough to get onto their radar. I’m stepping through the apps on my phone that might be the problem. It’s definitely NOT that I’m using a device previously used by someone else. I am not.

So tired of cancelling a transferring this message and have tried everything else suggested that I tried this - to **** with what I lost. As it turns out, all I lost was my personal phone configuration, my alarms, timers etc, biggest pain was I had to re load my payment cards to Apple Pay but the other things in my wallet were still there. All contacts, games, app content remained the same.

The biggest thing is it seems to have worked - so far - I haven’t had the message in 24 hours.

Thank you.

I’ve tried following what that article says and I worked with Apple staff for 6 weeks and they don’t even seem clear on this. I have a lot of devices on my list and I’d planned to give one to my kid but according to some staff I have to wait 30 days even though my account was last associated more than 90 days ago. So in essence what they’re saying is you have to wait 90 days plus you have to wait another 30 days after you sign out without using the device in the meantime.

First though they did screen recordings of several devices, screenshots, and a full disk diagnostic just to tell me the policy requires my device to be signed out of my Apple account and then wait dormant for 30 days before I can sign my kid’s Apple Account in on it. Do other people have two phones for a month at a time because this is expensive?

if anybody here can clarify I’d appreciate it. It’s just not making sense that devices remain tied to a previous account like that even once you sign out of them.

It’s been 98 days since I first started getting this popup message (actually, probably longer but I started taking note of it 98 days ago.) I was really hoping it would resolve itself after 90 days, but it’s still plaguing my device multiple times a day. And it’s a bogus message; I’ve had no issues with automatic downloads or downloading past purchases.

For reference: running iOS 18.3.2 on an 8th generation iPad, purchased new from Apple (although I’m beginning to think they defrauded me and sold me a refurbished device—why else would it be associated with a different account?)

Apple, are you ever going to fix this bug?

The "This Device is Already Associated With an Apple Account" message has been popping-up on my phone since before Halloween. Around that time I read this thread and started pressing the "Transfer" option each time the message appears. The message itself seems to promise that after 90 days, if all else fails, Apple will end the notifications and complete the "transfer" of my device from the old account. Yet this pop-up furiously continues.

There was no such message displaying for many months after I purchased my refurbished phone, so the continual reminders that started last October now feel like a torture routine aimed at purchasers of refurbished equipment. In December I contacted the company that sold me the phone (an iPhone SE 2020) and a chat rep gave me some ideas on how to stop the message, adding that if their suggestions didn't work to stop the pop-up there was nothing else they could do for me.

Several updates of IOS 18 have processed since Halloween. As each new update installs I secretly hope it will make the pop-up go away. No such luck! As of tomorrow, the message has been displaying multiple times per hour for 6 months!! Can anyone explain why the messages didn't stop after 90 days?

Im currently at iOS 18.5. I’ve had no changes to my apple account on this device. I’ve already called apple support for this same thing too. They had no answers. I had to do a factory reset of my iPad and it still pops up multiple times an hour no matter if I click transfer or cancel. Today it’s been sending me to the App Store when I click transfer but the App Store says page cannot be found. It’s driving me insane!!!!
