problem with iphone photos app when tryin to markup photos with text

iPhone 16 Pro

iOS 18.1.1

My iPhone was just updated to 18.1.1 a few days ago (roughly 11/26/24) and I'm having this trouble for the first time. Not sure what my previous version was, but I've not had this problem until now. Can't change the color and am also having issues, sometimes, even changing the size, in some instances, at least when trying to add text and change the formatting when first taking a screenshot on my phone.

One thing I just noticed is that it *does* work (changing color, size, etc) if I edit a photo already in my gallery.

my whole menu disappears when choosing a colour. Very annoying. The small useful things are being lost due to these updates. Maybe a core functionality should be always available with no updates. Really had enough of updates that mess things up.

I just installed the iOS 18.0.1 update. Looks like they fixed this issue. 🙌

Wow, thanks so much, Chris6861. This is the only workaround on the text editing issue that has actually worked for me. Kudos to you or whomever figured out all the steps.

My iPhone 13 was updated automatically about a month ago with iOS 18.1.1, and that's when the text editing issue started for me. I use this feature ALL the time for cataloging my plant photos, so needless to say I was cranky when it broke.

Even with your fix, editing is still wonky after the update and I've noticed that it's not as sensitive to touch. (Example: changing font size, now that the slider is gone.) Also, when employing the fix I sometimes have trouble bringing up the first pop-up to choose "More>>Format," and have to touch the text in JUST THE RIGHT WAY to get the pop-up choices to appear (although I'm still not sure what the right way is when I do get it to work!).

Anyway, you've made me a happy camper and I do appreciate your helpful post. :-)

Interim solution: Create your text in the font and color in your notes app and copy and paste into your text field in the picture. Worked well for me today. Good luck.

Yes I have this problem in 18.2

Trying to add text on an iPad- I go to change the text colour and it puts the word ‘Text’ in black on the image despite the fact i already have a different colour selected in the palette from a previous edit. All i can do is press the undo arrow (Last time i ended up with two ‘Text’ words in black appearing at once)

Ian0851, do these steps below. It's a permanent fix and only needs to be done once:

• Open your photo and click the 'edit' icon.
• Click the "markup" icon at top-right (looks like the tip of a pen).
• Select the pencil-eraser icon at the bottom.
• Tap your photo.

Now you should be able to click the + icon and add text, change font colors, and edit normally.

It is working for me now (on an iPhone 15 Pro Max), but I have to use the color palette in the text tools, not the color picker in the main toolbar. That is very confusing.

I’m having exactly the same issue as described above. There seems to be no way to change the color of the text added onto photographs. I wish Apple releases a remedy shortly. Many thanks.

I’m having the same problem. I use the text menu often. This problem started with the download of 18. Hopefully Apple is on it. AI suggests several fixes, none of which work.

Same problem with my 16 pro max. My old 14 pro max works perfectly but the new phone won’t let me change font color, nor will it let me actually change the font from the default. Really annoying.
