Sending message to non iPhone (android) user

My husband has an Android, I have an iphone. I just updated to ios18 Monday, for 5 days I had no issues texting him and the new rcs messaging was working fine with new reactions and read receipt. I tried to forward a message from a conversation from an iphone user, to my husbands (again android). It tried to send as iMessage for some strange reason. Now I cannot get my phone to stop trying to send him iMessages. I have deleted his contact, deleted chat (not fully as I don't want to fully lose the conversation but I deleted it, recovered later). When I turn rcs off, I can text him. If I keep it on, it tries to send as iMessage and fails. If I select send as sms it will go, but I don't want to keep sending things like that or keep this new feature off. I'm not having issue with any other android user I text.

Same here! I updated to iOS18 when it became available and things were working fine with RCS, but two days ago something definitely changed, some of my texts to my husband's android were showing up as "not delivered" and then it started showing that I was sending "iMessage" texts. We figured out that my iPhone started defaulting to send texts to his work phone which is an iPhone (I had this saved in his contact). I'm not sure why all of a sudden it started defaulting to the iPhone for texts so I removed his work phone from my address book and added it as a completely separate contact (which I never had to do before) BUT I still can't send texts to the android - even with RCS turned off now?
