Sequoia causing iMac to crash instead of sleeping and will not turn back on

Hello,

My iMac, whenever it sleeps, will not wake up. This happened since Sequoia, every time. In order to turn my Mac back on, I have to unplug it for a few seconds then plug back in and turn on, get crash report. Interim solution has been to just keep the Mac off when not using it like it's 1990. Next, I will just bootcamp with Windows and continue without Sequoia, as I have seen several people with same issue and no solutions provided to them. Any advice in the meantime? Please and thank you.

iMac 27″, macOS 15.0

You may have software installed that is running on startup that is conflicting with the OS. These categories of apps are known to cause problems:

  • AntiVirus
  • Cleaners
  • Optimizers
  • VPN

After uninstalling those with the provided installers, and still experiencing trouble, then post the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. The report contains no personal information.

I've attempted booting in Safe Model a few times, but my Mac reverts back to a standard start-up.
Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do here. Should I take this to the store and have them check it out?

Have you attempted to troubleshoot any USB problems by:

  • Eliminating any port hubs
  • Reduce the number of devices connected
  • Switching cables to determine if a cable is bad
  • Using different ports on your Mac Studio

I too have the same 2020 Intel iMac and had the exact same problem after upgrading to Sequoia. Seems it will not wake up from sleeping. The only thing that seemed to clear the problem for me is to disable the sleep mode in system settings. In System Settings/Energy I turned ON "prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off" and just in case I turned OFF "Enable Power Nap".

I also went into System Setting/Lock Screen and set "Turn display off when inactive" to NEVER. Not sure I needed to do all that but it is not crashing since. You can still use the screen saver function and of course this will use more energy but I did not want to take a chance of losing any data as I use a ton of production software. Also keep a recent back up with time machine on an external drive to play it safe. They really need to fix this issue.

I have since reset the System Settings/Screen Saver back to a designated time (In my case 30 minutes). The screen saver was just too much to be on constantly. That didn't matter anyway. The key is that it does not go into a sleep mode so I kept the Energy section set to- ON "prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off" and OFF "Enable Power Nap". I have not had the problem again since I set those. I did just receive a notification for an update to the Sequoia software so hopefully this problem will be addressed.

I started having this same issue a couple of days ago.

Running Sequoia 15.1 (24B83) on a MBPro 2023 Apple M2 Max 64GB. It's always connected to power, and I only have an external hard drive connected via a USB-C dock.

The first time I thought it was random, but then it kept happening every morning and everytime the computer goes to sleep mode.

I'm not really sure what to think =(

This is my last crash report:

Thanks for the questions,

iMac: Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020. I was running whatever the OS version was before that. I had auto updates on.

Hi, did you find a fix for this. I'm experiencing the same or similar issue on my Macbook Air M3 after updating from Sequoia 15 to 15.0.1. When I close the lid, the MacBook fully crashes and won't turn on until I hold down shift-control-option-power for 10 seconds and then press the power button. Same issue occurs on Safe mode as well. However, I don't get any crash reports and instead have diagnostic reports like this:
