After upgrading my M1 iMac to Sequoia yesterday, I've been noticing that the CPU usage for Google Drive is constantly high (25 to 45%). Since none of the Google Drive folders are downloaded, this CPU usage in the past has always been very low--so low as to be almost unnoticeable.
There are a few posts on Reddit about this same issue.

I noticed the same thing on a 13'' M2 MBP running Sequoia. Whenever I connect my external monitor the CPU usage of Google Drive goes up to 40-50%. It drops to almost 0% when I disconnect the drive. This happens consistently and must be at least part of the problem. Maybe Google Drive thinks the monitor is an external disk that it tries to scan?
My solution was to move to Dropbox. I used Multicloud to transfer everything, and I have yet to look back: Dropbox offers better pricing, better file recovery technology, and faster download and sync speeds.

This is still hosted by Google, I suspect the "5-percent" in the URL is used to help them stagger rollouts of new code somehow. When I grabbed and installed that copy I got v100.0.2.0, and the bug seems to be resolved for me. I just took this from the Reddit post earlier, this is the URL that homebrew uses to download the newest copy of the google drive client.

Confirmed this happens even after a clean install (no Migration Assistant) on a brand new MacBook Pro M4 Pro. 54% CPU usage all the time, even after sync completed 24hours ago. Unplug monitor, CPU usage drops to near zero.
This has been plaguing me for months. I only just this thread. I'm shocked at how Google has reckless disdain for and actively gaslights users reading @ozsmacd comment at Nov 10, 2024 5:53 PM.
Same. Upgraded to MacOS 15 last Tuesday, seeing Google Drive PU running ~40% consistently. Can only imagine what it's doing to my battery life.
After 1 week on Sequoia, CPU usage for Google Drive remains high. In Activity Monitor, it almost always has the highest CPU usage of any process.
Yes, Google Drive is running at 61% on M1 MacBook Pro. Been happening since the Sequoia upgrade.

Me too. Google drive is 98.0.0 version, macos is 15.0.1.

It's been 1.5 months and not still not fixed by Google. Hard to justify sticking with Google when their software support is this bad.
Does no one at Google use a Mac and multiple monitors?
Same here. Solved it unplugging my screen. But not a long-term solution unfortunately.
Same thing here with my M2 MBA running Sequoia 15.1 and Google Drive 99.0.0.0. Already gave them a feedback through the app. Hope this is fixed soon...
