Can’t switch apps with finger gesture when in iOS Garageband

When using iOS Garageband, I’m unable to use finger gestures on my iPad (11” M2) to switch to another app. I can only switch between apps with the Magic Keyboard attached, or by getting the starting window (Notification Center), dragging down from the top of the screen.


Is this a bug, or is there something I’m not understanding?
