With the release of iOS 18, photos that are put into albums now default to sorting by newest first vs previously they sorted by oldest first. Is there a way to change the default back to the old way? I know I can manually do this in each album but I use my phone for work, taking many pictures that are sorted into many new albums daily so it would be time consuming to do this.

I see pictures to the "root" library oldest up, newest bottom. Once I create a new album with just two pictures, the order of these two pictures in album is reversal, i.e. newest first, oldest last. This makes no sense even when browsing this album as presentation - starting with the newest and go against time.

You can change the sort order of an album with he sort icon at the bottom:
But I don't think you've ever been able to change the default direction.
That is what I want, since updating to iOS 18 albums sort the photos by newest first and I don’t want to manually change the sort order on a dozen albums every day if I don’t have to

Just a data point. Mine also sort that way. And it's the default because I haven't made any changes.
So, on phone with iOS 17 new album was created in former sort, i.e. oldest pictures on top, newest on bottom.
Seems, it is definitely bug/feature of new OS on all platforms. 😢
This is a workaround but not a solution. I create lots of albums daily by script with pictures incoming from colleagues at work. I need photos to be sorted same way as in root library, i.e. sequentially.

Well, it seems it can't be the OS, since my phone does this and yours doesn't, and we have the same OS. I have an iPhone 12 running 18.0.1. I don't really use my phone for much other than connecting to my car-- I do most Photos stuff on my Mac. So I don't think I could have changed default settings. I don't have filters set.
Can you think of any differences? I'm out of ideas…

I will try to create an album on my wife's phone, which uses old iOS yet on same shared library.. Then we might be wiser...
