Error in downloading mail on IMAP after ios 18 upgrade

I am unable to download my mail using the native mail app after upgrading to IOS 18. I am getting the following error; “Network Error (POSIX 96)”

The mail configuration is on imap with SSL.

iPad Pro, iPadOS 18

@ferrerod:

Here's the main part of the response I got from Fastmail who diagnosed and solved the problem on my account. It seems there was a bug in their mail engine that was benign until the iOS18 update, then no more. I hope this helps.

We had a bug which put random data into the HIGHESTMODSEQ value for some users. Their account was affected by this. We didn't think it was an issue because there was still heaps of number-space left, but the HIGHESTMODSEQ values were higher than a signed int64 can hold. This was fine because we use an unsigned int64_t internally, but the spec was updated a few years ago to make it a signed value, so we were strictly wrong.

Apple's parser couldn't handle these oversize numbers, and failed.

This has now been fixed by resetting the HIGHESTMODSEQ value for these users which also means this will never happen for them again.

Did fastmail tell you what technically they did? No one else has a workable solution. Some of us support our own mail serves - though perhaps rare.... would be great if you could get them to tell you exactly what they did for IMAP solution.

We iPhone users can’t run a business or our lives if IOS 18 throws a POSIX 50 error message up related to email service and the only thing the end user can do to run their business/lives is sit with a smart phone that cannot communicate because of POSIX 50. Email is vital, crucial, decisive, fundamental, imperative, important, indispensable to daily communication.

I’m having the same problem, and it just started today. This is on my iPhone SE, running iOS 18.2 for the past few days. At the moment this is affecting only one of my email accounts (knock on wood), and I have several using the same mail server. It’s odd to me that this is just now occurring days after upgrading the iOS, and just weird it’s affecting one mail account.

I think that Apple is focusing so much on making the aesthetics of the user interface so cutesy-poo, that they’ve simply neglected to ensure that the functionality is actually working consistently. After reading through this thread I am both surprised and not, that this has been a known issue for months, and that Apple has apparently not given a single f*** about fixing it. It seems, to me anyhow, that their coders are suffering from the dreaded ID10T error. Either that, or this is part of the SKYNET takeover.

I have 4 imap accounts on the same server, only one account is having issues with zero resolution. Exact settings at the other 3 domains that work on the iPhone. Desktop is fine, iPhone fails and forced to use webmail. Not great when you are expecting communication alerts.

When I delete the account in question and re-ad it, I get mail for a moment, but not all of them and then after roughly 15 min, it defaults to failing to connect with the -9,808 message.

Apple, please shed light on this.

I have read through all 16 pages of this thread and methodically tried EVERY SINGLE answer and proposed solution.

Nothing works.

iOS 18.2. currently.

Problem began the instant I upgraded to iOS 18.

Customer service doesn’t exist in the modern world. I guess we’re all supposed to switch to Gmail.

this may be true for you and your specific mail account but this is not the core issue people are seeing here - the several account I have been troubleshooting with on different servers and devices do not have special characters in the password.

this is definitely a bug in iOS 18 and i dont think any kind of voodoo on the iOS settings is going to fully resolve without a patch from Apple.

Regarding missing mail in subfolders, I have found a solution.

It's a strange user interface change.

See my thread here.

I have not seen the POSIX errors in a while either. They seemingly went away, as I did no changes to my dovecot server, did not stop/start using a vpn. It was happening on wifi or cellular. But now it is not happening at all.

At least here, pi-hole was not a factor. "add BLOCK_ICLOUD_PR=false to /etc/pihole/pihole-FTL.conf and restart pihole-FTL (sudo service pihole-FTL restart)." I did that years ago, it's still set the same way.

@cube_23 - if there's any chance you could ask your mail/server provider to specify how they got in contact with Apple Support to make the necessary server-side mail fixes, some of us would be most grateful. I doubt your provider just called 1-800-MY-APPLE. Did they use an Enterprise Support call, or Apple Business? Would be grateful to know how to avoid going in circles.

I am wondering how many email servers that Apple users use are running without without encryption. It seems that it is a huge problem in the industry as per this article (Over three million POP3 and IMAP mail servers without TLS encryption) and switching them over to encryption will cause nothing but headaches going forward for end users on iPhones, iPads and Mac's.
