Let's say it's a csv file (or similar format) that Numbers can recognize as tabular data.

To import the data in Numbers on iOS:

  1. Open the Files app
  2. Navigate to the file with the data
  3. Long-press and choose Share
  4. If you don't see Numbers in the Share Sheet then tap the More... icon
  5. Scroll down and tap Numbers

The data will then be imported into a Numbers table.

What kind of a file is it? What is the structure of the data? Numbers can open (import) Excel files and text delimited files (comma or tab separated data) and some other structured text files. If it is one of those things, put the proper extension onto the end of the file and open it in Numbers. XLS or XLSX for Excel. TXT should work for any text-based file. If it is some other structure, who knows. If you don't know what it is, you could try putting a TXT extension on it (or on a copy of it) and opening it in a text editor to see what it looks like. If it looks tabular/structured, it might be possible to open it in Numbers. If it looks like gibberish and you're sure it is not an Excel file, it is likely not importable. In that case maybe whatever app you used to generate the data has an export function to turn it into something a spreadsheet can use.
