Wondering if you use your eMail address as your Apple ID, and if that may be what you need to change:

Your Apple ID is the account that you use to access all Apple services and make all of your devices work together seamlessly. After you log in, you can use the App Store, iCloud, iMessage, Apple Music, Apple TV+ and more.

If you no longer use the email address that's associated with your Apple ID, you can change it.

You won’t lose access to your contacts, purchases, or other account information

The distinction between Apple IDs and Apple accounts can be a bit unclear at times.

You normally wouldn't change your account – since, as brbo notes, that's what Apple uses to keep track of your purchases, subscriptions, iCloud backups, iCloud Photo Library, and so forth. If you changed your account, that would be like logging in as a different person.

You can change the main e-mail address associated with your account. This e-mail address is what most people (and most Apple Support documents) refer to as the "Apple ID". There can actually be several e-mail addresses associated with an Apple account – the current "Apple ID", and past "Apple IDs". I would assume that the reason would be to let you access purchases made under the old IDs even after you had switched to using the new one.
