Time capsule replacement

My old Time Capsule router/BU Harddrive died years ago. I just got a new Mac and would like to get a BU harddrive. Not a techie so I see the portable hard drives on the Apple site and if I was to get one of them would I just plug into USBC ports and would it run like my old Time Capsule did or what would I have to do so it worked like before.
