Garageband Recording Issue

Garageband USB to lead guitar recording no longer working properly (works in Audiacity so I know it's not a hardware issue). All leads and cables tested on other devices (ex. amps or other software) and they all work. This never used to be an issue. Same settings, same everything. When I record guitar it comes through extremely "clipped" and you can only make out some notes. It sounds like a phone call with the worst reception ever. Any ideas? Running a macbook pro with Sonoma 14.5 and a gibson les paul with a generic usb to jack cord from amazon.
