Deleted files still taking up space after emptying trash - too

Mac Pro OS version 12.3

I put files into the trash, then I empty the trash. The The space does not get freed after I empty the trash. I do not, nor have ever used, Time Machine. I have not recently updated the OS. I has been much longer than 24 hours since I emptied the trash. I have read several other similar postings but none have had the same conditions as mine.
