Garageband recording produces glitchy static, Audio and MIDI error message

After recording for years with GarageBand, this just started today. Symptoms: recording with a UA Volt 1 audio interface, glitchy static increases over ~30 seconds until an error message appears. "Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI. Sample Rate 43,115 recognized. Check conflict between GarageBand and external device."

Actions taken thus far:

  • Made sure all systems and apps are updated. 2020 M1 MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.5; GarageBand version 10.4.11
  • Confirmed that 44.1Hz and 24gb were selected for inputs and outputs
  • Clicked Reset MIDI Drivers in GarageBand Settings
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled UA Connect and the driver
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled GarageBand
  • Tried different cable connections: USB-C to USB-C; or USB-C to USB-B, with an Apple B to lightning converter

Additional possible symptoms:

  • If I change the sample or bit rate, that changes the number that appears in the error message. 43,052; 43,066; 42,959; and 43,115 for example

I'm at a loss for what else to try

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 14.5
