Audio not matching up with lips

I noticed after a big update 2 weeks ago that when editing on iMovie, the audio wasn't matching the lips on the videos that I imported. I have never had this problem before. I cleared iMovie preferences and this worked for about 10 days. Now it's doing it again. I have cleared preferences and restarted my computer but nothing seems to be helping. I saw that you can clap at the start and end of your video to help align the sound but I didn't do that in the video and the video can't be re-done.

Any advice? Like I said, this has never been a problem before. I didn't change the settings on the device that I took the video on, I didn't take video from a new device, nothing like that.

Control-click (right-click) the clip in the timeline and select Detach Audio from the contextual menu.

The audio will form a separate track below the video and you can drag it one way or the other to get it in synch.

You will only need to drag a tiny amount so expand the timeline as much as possible.

You can also use the free download, Handbrake, to convert or reconvert to Mp4/ACC, that Handbrake will do by default. You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie. Now see if the sync problem is cured.
