Getting Apple ID Signed in on an iPod Touch 2nd Gen

I have just gotten a pristine iPod touch second hand, and I have been attempting to add my Apple ID onto it, in an attempt to get anything out of it. It is ancient, and I am aware of that fact (Good ole' ios 4.2.1!), but I wanted to see if there was any sort of way to get the app store to even open. It hooks up fine to my WiFi, and to my PC for library sync, but refuses to connect to iTunes store whenever I try to sign in, either through the App Store itself, or through the settings. IIRC, this is probably (at the very least) because it cannot get any two-factor codes, or maybe the OS is just beyond the pale, and I'm trying to run a fools errand. Unfortunately, any resources I've been able to find thus far have been very unhelpful, and I don't want to call off the search too early. Any suggestions appreciated!
