iPod frozen on "Connect to iTunes" screen

My iPod has frozen on the "Connect to iTunes" screen. I cannot open it or restore it or get it back to DFU mode. I have tried holding buttons for the suggested time periods but to no good. I keep coming to this screen and no further. When I plug into iTunes it tells me to place it in DFU mode but I can't. HELP !!
