Magic Keyboard backlight manual settings not working

I have the 2024 IPad Pro 13” with the 2024 Magic Keyboard. I read on Apple that I can use the manual setting to adjust the keyboard back lighting with the slider in settings. However, my slider is disabled even after I have iOS 17.5 installed. Am I missing something? I did see the keyboard light come on once but even after using the control center option, I cannot manually adjust the backlighting. Thoughts?

I got it to work by adding the keyboard brightness button to the control panel, and then briefly removing the iPad from the Magic Keyboard case and putting it back in - just a moment will do. Voila - it works.

I have the same problem. It seems to be related to the Assistive Touch feature. When the AT is activated, it drops the keyboard backlighting adjustment. For some reason, when you turn this feature off, it does not always reactive the backlighting control. I toggled my AT on and off and then did a restart (volume down, volume up, hold main button past offer to turn the iPad off). After restart, the backlighting was workings (same room lighting conditions). I flipped the AT on and off again and the backlighting was gone again. It doesn’t always happen when using AT (I don’t use it but sometimes it gets turned on by accident - triple tap on main button - maybe I’ll turn this short cut off).

Same issue. I have to remove the iPad from the keyboard and then re-attach. The ambient light sensor should always work, not requiring a detach and re-attach. I also tested the black iPad Magic Keyboard. It did not have this issue. Further, there should be the option to control the keyboard backlight regardless of ambient light meter. Should be an easy iPadOS resolution.

Thank you for sharing. Your restart is probably what resolved it for the short term. (I don't have AT activated.) It seems that ANY power activity - unplugging and repluging in the Magic Keyboard, detaching and re-attaching the iPad to the magic keyboard, powering on and powering off - "resets" something that allows the automatic backlighting to work for another day or two. Then it fails again. Apple should just allow us to turn off ambient like we can do with iPhones if they can't resolve the problem (which I'm sure they can but not sure why it hasn't been yet ... top of the line new iPad and new Magic Keyboard should not have a problem like this that I've never experienced with Mac, Macbook, etc.)
