Is a VPN the solution for Provider Spying? (HELP)

Hi, I use an SE 2020 2nd Generation; I have researched VPNs and understand Apple devices do not need, and can develop problems if using, a third-party VPN. However, my concern is not one remedied by Apple innovation.

I need to protect my online activity and device data FROM MY PROVIDER. Specifically, my internet provider and my cellular plan provider (different companies though both owned by problem individual). Any replies will be best understood if keeping in mind this is my first iphone. All replies receive gratitude. Include thoughts on how to proceed with formal complaints& reporting. Anyone ever hear of such an atrocity? I can’t find an example online where this has happened to someone and feel alone/uncertain what to do. Per the request to avoid personal info, I am not including how I know I have an unethical provider.

iPhone SE, iOS 17

iCloud+ Private Relay will address most of your concerns.

PR: https://www.apple.com/privacy/docs/iCloud_Private_Relay_Overview_Dec2021.PDF

PR uses connection encryption and two hops to mask both source and destination, and uses so-called Oblivious DNS over HTTPS to mask DNS traffic.

ODoH: https://blog.cloudflare.com/oblivious-dns/

There have been cases when Private Relay has been offline, akin to VPN providers or VPN apps going offline or otherwise failing.

If you need better coverage around network connection failures, or if you want protection around the telephone numbers you call, then you’re headed for a much more complex network with a VPN embedded in the firewall. Which is doable, but more work, and more costs. And it also means acquiring and installing your own networking gear, and not using that provided by your ISP, or not using the ISP gear in sensitive network positions.

Or you’re headed for different provider(s) for ISP and mobile.

Or legal discussions between your own legal counsel and then the telecommunications regulators as appropriate. Some evidence will be expected, of course.

Your best bet is to change your unethical provider. No need to remain with this provider if you are already certain that the company is unethical. Also, getting a VPN does not protect your data and online activity from your Provider. VPN masks your IP address to the websites that you visit but your provider will always know your online activity.
