iMovie no longer plays back in landscape

I've used iMovie for 10+ years, and recently the program won't play back any photo or video in a landscape mode. It will play the whole video, but crops in into the center of the playback screen. I'm very familiar with the cropping features, but nothing changes it. I'll attach two pictures, one showing that the picture/video is loaded in full landscape, but is forced in playback to the center of the screen. Any advice will be most helpful!

Keith,

Thanks for your ideas. This is what I tried:

  1. I put a landscape video in the first position. Unfortunately, it didn't change the situation. Do I need to complete scrap the current video and start over -- will that affect this change?
  2. I started the computer in Safe Mode, then tried to open iMovie. It churned for a minute then gave me this message "Safe mode does not support OpenGL hardware acceleration, which is required to run iMovie. Please reboot normally and try again."

Thank you. If you have any other ideas, I'm ready to give them a try.
